Witnesses are people who see the crime in a mystery happen. Often times, the detective will ask the witnesses what they saw when the crime took place. For example, what did the criminal look like? Did you notice anything unusual about the way they moved, talked, etc.? Where did they go after the crime?
Some of the answers that the witnesses give to the detective are vital to the solving of the mystery. These answers can also be clues!

Witnesses in The murder on the orient express
There are not really any witnesses to the murder except Poirot. Hercule Poirot sees the lady in the scarlet kimono walking down the corridor. He believes that she is part of the murder, a clue. Later, he discovers that the lady in the kimono is actually a red herring. Also, Mrs. Hubbard could be considered a witness because she saw the murderer in her compartment.
